Studio-Tour

I always find it exciting to see the studios or offices of other freelancers. People's workspaces often reflect their personalities and creative habits—some thrive in chaos, others prefer everything neat and minimal. Bold and colorful, or calm and muted. Quiet or buzzing.

Today, I’m taking you on a little tour of my photo studio and office.

I’ve been based here since 2015 and share the space with three other photographers. Not long ago, I moved my office setup into the studio, as I missed the creative exchange when working from home. I also tend to be less productive at home. You know the drill: should I just do a quick load of laundry instead of finishing this blog post? ;-)

That said, I don’t work here every single day, but I still enjoy the freedom of working from home when I need it.

The Studio Space

The heart of our space is the actual photo studio. It’s where we set up backdrops, light our subjects, and shoot to our hearts’ content. If this room could talk, it would have endless stories to tell from past photoshoots.

I’m very grateful for the laminate flooring, it allows for the occasional creative mess, which is quick to clean up. Still, you’ll sometimes find traces of glitter, feathers, or paint from past projects. ;-)

The back wall is lined with a selection of light shapers, which we can easily grab from hooks as needed. Mounted to the ceiling is a background roll system for paper backdrops, which can be cranked down whenever needed. On the right-hand wall, you’ll find even more backgrounds and boards. There are also ladders, Styrofoam for bouncing or blocking light, glass panels, mirrors, and trestles.

On the left side, there’s a large Errex shelving unit where we store our studio flashes, tripods, and other gear.

In the next corner, there’s a wall cabinet filled with all kinds of props, tableware, faux flowers, paints, etc. We also keep some beauty products, makeup, and a clothes hanger here.

Then there’s our studio sofa—a spot for clients (or us!) to relax for a moment. Nearby, you’ll see a large column stand, and close to the door, there’s a mirror and table used as a makeup station. This is where makeup artists prep the models before a shoot.

And look up there! Even more backdrops are stored on top of the cupboard. Yep, photographers and their many backgrounds… :-)

A hidden cabinet holds all the cleaning supplies, and one trolley is dedicated to all things Covid hygiene. Another trolley usually stands in the middle of the studio, it’s our rolling workstation, where we keep the laptop and tools during shoots.

The Office / Break Area

Now on to the office-slash-lounge area. We recently rearranged it a bit. There’s a long table that serves as our dining, meeting, and general-purpose table. It’s also where you’ll always find plenty of snacks and sweets.

Next to it is a small fridge with a microwave on top, and a sideboard stocked with dishes, coffee, glasses, and mugs. Everything you need in a mini kitchen.

In the center of the room is a low Errex shelf where we keep documents, and in my case, extra props and camera gear. My workspace includes a monitor that I connect to the laptop I bring from home.

Fotostudio-Tour

Ich finde es spannend, wenn ich das Studio oder Büro anderer Freelancer sehen darf. Die verschiedenen Arbeitsweisen von Individuen spiegeln sich in ihrem Arbeitsort wieder. Einige arbeiten gerne im Chaos, andere mögen es organisiert. Bunt oder dezent. Ruhig oder lebendig.

Heute führe ich dich durch mein Fotostudio und Büro.

Seit 2015 bin ich hier eingemietet und teile den Raum mit 3 weiteren Fotografinnen. Vor nicht all zu langer Zeit habe ich mein Büro ins Studio verlegt, da ich im Home-Office den kreativen Austausch vermisste. Oft bin ich zu Hause auch weniger produktiv als an einem externen Arbeitsplatz. Hmmm, soll ich lieber kurz Wäsche waschen, anstatt diesen Blog fertig zu schreiben… ;-)

Ich arbeite nicht jeden Tag der Woche hier, sondern geniesse die Freiheit auch von Zuhause aus arbeiten zu dürfen.

Der wichtigste Raum in unserem Atelier ist das eigentliche Fotostudio. Hier stellen wir unsere Hintergründe auf, beleuchten unsere Subjekte und knipsen was das Zeugs hält. Wenn dieser Raum sprechen könnte, würde es Bände über vergangene Fotoshootings erzählen.

Ich war schon oft froh, dass der Boden aus Laminat besteht. Dies ermöglicht es, richtige Sauereien zu veranstalten, die schnell wieder weggeputzt sind. Hie und da findet man aber immer noch etwas Glitzer, Federn oder Farbe von vergangenen Fotoshootings. ;-)

An der Rückwand hängt eine Auswahl an verschiedenen Lichtformern, die wir praktischerweise einfach vom Haken nehmen und für unsere Shootings nutzen können. An der Decke ist ein Rollensystem für Papierhintergründe montiert. Bei Bedarf können diese einfach runtergekurbelt werden. Rechts an der Wand befinden sich etliche weitere Hintergründe und Platten. Auch Leitern, Styropor zum Aufhellen oder Abdunkeln, Glas, Spiegel und Böcke findet man auf dieser Seite.

Auf der linken Seite steht ein grosses Errex Regal. Darin bewahren wir unsere Studioblitze, Stative und sonstiges Fotoequipment auf.

In der nächsten Ecke ist ein Wandschrank, wo diverse Requisiten wie Geschirr, Dekoblumen, Farbe usw. gelagert werden. Auch Make-up, Pflegeprodukte und ein Kleiderbügel sind vorhanden.

Weiter geht's zu unserem Sofa, wo Kunden oder auch wir einige Minuten relaxen können. Hier steht auch ein grosses Säulenstativ. Gleich bei der Tür befinden sich ein Spiegel und Tisch, welche als Make-up Station gebraucht werden. Hier können Make-up Artists die Models schminken.

Und siehe da! Auf dem Schrank hat es noch mehr Hintergründe! Jaja, die Fotograf*innen und ihre diversen Backgrounds. :-)

Ein versteckter Schrank birgt noch das ganze Putzmaterial und ein Trolley wurde für die Platzierung aller Contre-Covid-Produke genutzt. Ein zweiter Trolley steht meist mitten im Raum. Darauf können wir während Shootings unseren Laptop und andere Tools legen.

Weiter geht's zum Büro, Schrägstrich Aufenthaltsraum. Kürzlich haben wir diesen umgestellt. Hier steht ein langer Ess-, Sitzungs- und Ablagetisch. Darauf sind immer viele Snacks and Süssigkeiten vorhanden. Daneben steht ein kleiner Kühlschrank mit einer Mikrowelle darauf und einem Sideboard mit allem, was man in einer kleinen Küche so an Geschirr, Kaffee, Gläser, Tassen etc. benötigt.

Inmitten des Raums steht ein niedriges Errex- Regal, wo wir unsere Dokumente und in meinem Fall, weitere Requisiten und Kameramaterial aufbewahren. An meinem Arbeitsplatz steht ein Monitor. Bei dem schliesse ich meinen Laptop an, den ich jeweils von Zuhause mitnehme.

Ich denke, das schliesst meine kleine Studiotour ab. Ich hoffe, dir hat diese kleine Exkursion in meine Arbeitswelt gefallen.
