From Idea to Image
Today, as a little distraction, I’m giving you a behind-the-scenes look at how I work.
Many of my images start with a single inspiration. I might be inspired by an object, a color, a place, or by the images and artworks of my fellow creatives.
Slowly, I begin to paint a picture in my mind and search for similar inspirations to round out the idea. Sketching. Photographing. Editing. Voilà!
For these particular images, I felt like playing with colored pencils. I wanted something colorful, minimal, and with a bit of shadow play. In my mind, I already knew which background color I wanted to use and how the pencils would roughly be arranged.
Then I started looking for reference images on Pinterest and Google that matched the vision in my head. I always have to be careful here — looking at other images too early, before a concrete idea has formed, can lead to photos that end up looking too much like someone else’s. And I’m a photographer, not a thief. ;-)
Pinterest and Google, however, help me refine and add to my ideas. After a long search, I found a few examples in the cosmetics world that came very close to what I had in mind.
Once the image in my head is fully formed, I try to get it down on paper. Sometimes I write the idea out, or I sketch it. It helps me organize my thoughts. Sketches are especially helpful because I often notice during drawing that certain perspectives don’t make sense. I can find a solution right away — rather than realizing it during the shoot and having to rebuild the entire set.
When everything feels right, I use my notes and sketches to find the right props.
Then, finally, it’s time to shoot. The sketches help me work efficiently. But with some images, I realize they aren’t as exciting as I imagined. That’s why I try to sketch multiple ideas so I always have a plan B up my sleeve. In this case, I couldn’t realize all the sketches — but during the shoot, a new idea popped into my head. Some things just can’t be planned.
On to the retouching and tadaaa!

Von der Idee zum Bild
Heute erhälst Du als Ablenkung einen Einblick in meine Arbeitsweise.
Viele meiner Bilder fangen mit einer einzelnen Inspiration an. Ich lasse mich von einem Objekt, einer Farbe, einem Ort oder von den Bildern und Kunstwerken meiner Zunftkolleginnen inspirieren.
Langsam male ich ein Bild in meinem Kopf aus und suche ähnliche Inspirationen, die meine Idee abrunden. Skizzieren. Fotografieren. Bearbeiten. Voilà!
Bei diesen Bildern hatte ich Lust mit Buntstiften zu spielen. Ich wollte es farbig, schlicht und mit etwas Schattenspiel. In meinem Kopf wusste ich, welche Hintergrundfarbe ich nutzen möchte und wie die Stifte ungefähr ausgelegt werden.
Dann fing ich an auf Pinterest und Google Inspirationen rauszusuchen, die das beschreiben, was sich in meinem Kopf abspielt. Hier muss ich immer aufpassen, denn nach anderen Bildern zu forschen, wenn noch keine konkrete Idee vorhanden ist, kann dazu führen, dass die Fotografien zu fest einer anderen gleichen. Und ich bin ja Fotografin und keine Diebin. ;-)
Pinterest oder Google helfen aber meine Ideen zu ergänzen. Nach langem Suchen fand ich einige Beispiele im Bereich Kosmetik, die meiner Idee sehr Nahe kamen.
Wenn die Fotografien in meinem Kopf ausgemalt sind, versuche ich es auf Blatt zu bringen. Manchmal schreibe ich die Idee auf oder ich skizziere sie. Es hilft mir meine Gedanken zu ordnen. Skizzen sind vor allem hilfreich, da ich während dem zeichnen merke, dass gewisse Perspektiven keinen Sinn machen. Sofort kann ich eine Lösung suchen, anstatt dass ich es erst während der Aufnahme merken würde und das ganze Set umbauen müsste.
Wenn alles für mich stimmt, werden anhand meiner Notizen und Skizzen die passenden Requisiten gesucht.
Nun wird endlich fotografiert. Die Skizzen helfen mir, schnell zu arbeiten. Bei gewissen Bildern, merke ich jedoch, dass sie nicht so spannend sind, wie ich mir das ausgemalt habe. Ich versuche daher mehrere Ideen aufzuzeichnen, um noch einen Plan B in der Hinterhand zu haben. In diesem Fall gelang es mir nicht alle Skizzen umzusetzen, dafür hatte ich während dem Shooting eine neue Idee. Alles lässt sich dann halt doch nicht planen.
Ab in die Retusche und tadaaa! Was hälst Du von den Bildern?
