Work-Life Balance as a Freelancer
How do I balance work and life? This is one of the most common questions in freelancing.
To me, it doesn’t happen by default; I have to create it. So here is my personal take on work-life balance.
Setting clear boundaries
If I don’t set boundaries, no one else will. That means being clear with clients about my working hours and availability, but also with myself. As a freelancer, there’s always more I could do.
Defining realistic working hours that match my energy is important to me. For example, I take Fridays off from client work. I use that time to recharge creatively: visiting a museum, working on a personal project, or learning something new. And sometimes, after a tough week, I simply rest.
I also try to stick to a 9–5 structure, because my clients usually work regular hours, so I need to be mindful of that.
Separating work and free time
One of the biggest shifts has been learning to fully switch off.
When I work, I focus on work.
When I rest, I actually rest. No emails, no “quick edits.”
Real work-life balance only exists when my free time feels like free time.
(Of course, I still catch myself thinking about a project sometimes :-))
Focusing on what matters
This has been a big one for me. I used to try to do everything at once, as quickly as possible. But I’ve learned that I don’t have to. Prioritizing fewer, more meaningful projects reduces stress and improves the quality of my work. Not every opportunity or task is worth my time, and that’s okay.
Work smarter, not harder
Freelance work-life balance isn’t just about working less, but working better.
automate repetitive tasks
outsource when needed
build passive income streams
focus on higher-value projects
Honestly, I’m still figuring this out. Especially passive income and higher-value projects. But I can already see how this creates more space both in my work and my life.
You don’t have to be busy to be successful
This is something I learned a few years ago, and only now am I really starting to understand it.
First off: Success can look very different for everyone. It doesn’t always mean you need to be rich to be successful.
Secondly, we live in a culture that glorifies being busy. But being constantly stressed doesn’t make you more important or better.
You can build a successful freelance career and have a life that fulfills you.
Freelancing with balance means setting boundaries, protecting your time, and building a way of working that supports your life, not the other way around.
As much as I care about my work, I don’t want it to define me completely. Life has more to offer than being constantly busy.
Taking care of my happiness and my interests outside of work is what allows me to still enjoy both my work and my life in the long run.
See you soon,
Rachel
